On Road Encounters

In pune, there is never a dull moment when one is driving.

Everyday, it somehow happens that i get into close shave!

I am planning to post all such incidents here.
So buckle up, put on ur helmets for this joy-ride, hoping that there wont be any road incident that i wont be able to write down later :)

Friday, Jan 7, 2011:

we planned to go to baner around 8pm. so started early for office as had to come back home by 7-7:30 pm.
The ride to office was again free of any major troubles.
Returned home in evening without any major findings.
We started around 8:30pm for baner. Took the swargate-tilak road-university-baner route.
There was quite traffic till swargate, as usual.
There was a jam near durvankur on tilak road.
There are basically non-operating signals on this busy cross-road and bikers zip through fast between cars.
Was standstill with 2-3 cars ahead of mine. unfortunately, i couldnt see a biker facing me coming from durvankur. he too stopped dead next to my a-pillar and thats the reason i couldnt figure him.
As we all started to move in, the biker also tried to squeeze between non-existing space between the 2 cars. My wifey saw him and shouted to stop me. the biker just dashed the front side though without any damages to either of us.

After that we went at very slow speeds till we reached home :)

Thursday, Jan 6, 2011:
Had shifted to hadapsar on sunday, 2nd jan.
the last 3 days (3,4 &5th jan) were pretty good for travel from hadapsar to my office near ruby hall. As my kid goes to school around 8am, was leaving early for office. So no traffic issues.
Was able to maintain speeds of 50-60km!
Finally the day, when i get into trouble on new route.
And to top it, its the same day when i decided to slow down to speed of 40km :(
So today i was determined not to reach 50km and was driving at tortoise speed.
Near koregaon park, which has a narrow stretch, 2 autos where going in parallel.
thinking smart, was following the auto on right side, assuming the left one will stop anytime as we all were at slow speeds. A toyota corolla was just besides/behind me.
The left side auto was planning to move to side/halt. suddenly the left auto moved right and was close to my bike. Assuming, corolla moving faster than me, i thought of stopping instead of moving ahead. however the car came too close to my bike and heard few typres screeching. The left auto then quickly zipped to the side of road and stopped a little later to drop the passenger.
That left me red faced and didnt dare to look behind :(
To my relief, i did see the corolla and all other bikers safely pass me.

Friday, December 31:
Last day of year!!
was feeling pretty happy about the day.
Had to attend marriage on 1st jan in mumbai and so started early to office with plans of returning home earlier in the evening.

The road near my house has been recently reinforced with cement concrete.
However the work is not yet complete. So there is this nearly complete stretch which keeps on randomly adding blockages on the dead centre and side of road. One has to be very carefull on this stretch which has some heavy traffic.
Was travelling, again at slow speeds, side by a car. A biker was just ahead of me and was trying to squeeze his bike into the narrow gap between a car and sand pile.
Obviosly his heavy bike- 180cc, skidded and dashed the car. luckily he didnt fell off the bike.
I was just behind him but fortunately due to slow speed was able to watch all this action.

Now when returning back from office, got into another shock. This time i was walking!
it so happened that my wifey asked to get some chicken for dinner.
There is this chicken shop on the same stretch, that i have mentioned earlier.
There is proper road blocking and then footpath and the shop.
So i parked my bike to the side of road and entered the shop. Somehow i thought to keep my head covered with helmet. Bought chicken and left the shop. Just as i stepped on footpath, a biker with pillon joomed through my face. howahhh...i didnt even see him coming. maybe because i was wearing helmet. That was pretty close :)

Tuesday, December 28:

Started from home@baner. Was cruising at very slow speed at 40. Reached the busy university junction and luckily was able to cross it after wait-time of 3 mins.
Then comes the action part.
There is a bridge near e-square, which is just near the university circle.
So all the people, stuck at university circle, generally speed up near the bridge.
As usual 2 swifts were trying to speed up just at the start of bridge, occupying both the lanes. It so happened that i was behind the swift which was on the right side. There was a scooter with a big metal can carrying milk just ahead of 2 cars, speeding on the extreme left of the bridge. Suddenly the can fell out of the scooter and milk was splashed all over. Maybe the can jumped out when the scooter bumped on the gap of bridge.
The can rolled from left side of the bridge to right of the road. Luckily the right swift driver was able to come to screeching halt in no time. As I was riding at slow speed, I too was able to stop in time. luckily no one was hurt. The poor scooter rider lost all his milk and maybe he must have lost quite a money (milk costs 33rs per ltr!), in case he was not the owner :(
Cant Imagine the outcome if i would have been speeding today...
Thank god for another save :)

So guys please drive slowly and dont forget to put on your helmets or strapping the seat belt..

Very interesting blog. A lot of blogs I see these days don't really provide anything that attract others, but I'm most definitely interested in this one. Just thought that I would post and let you know.

My Startup - The beginning

Background The idea struck way back in 2007 when I was playing for IMM team in Bangalore. This group used to organize regular matches and an annual tournament with rival group BTM. We used to have high drama even for the local weekend matches. Surprisingly there was no way to publish results on any cricketing site. So I pushed the scorecard and match details on wordpress blog. Here is the link to the older blog: Marathi Cricket blog From then on, me and prashant - who was also teammate at IMM, always discussed on how to setup such a website on our own. But then I moved to pune and things got slowed down due to lack of time. We were always in touch and the idea to start was still in our heads. Meantime, I was looking at different db schemas and tried to come with one on my own. For almost 3 years, we were not sure how to go for this startup. So we tried our hands with joomla. And once we saw that we can build our own custom module like the way we wanted it, we became s...

Metro in pune

Metro in pune (28th Jan 2010) Now officially the govt has given the green signal to this project. As everyone knows, this decision was delayed quite a few times and god knows when it all had started. I find one thing that is common between these projects from pune and bangalore. These projects were approved once the land/flat prices  had reached there peak values. bangalore real estate prices were already were at its peak then and people thought it will bubble down. then came the metro and surely it helped push the prices upwards. So i am trying to understand the bigger picture. Did these cities had congestion problems earlier- yes. Did these cities had high real estate growth earlier- yes Did these cities had heavy migrant population leading to influx of lot of people- yes. Did these cities expanded like crazy- yes. The last one is really the one thing i consider to be the reason behind this. Both these cities expanded in residential boundaries. say now people are ...
